Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera
Frida first
find out about Diego Rivera when he was painting his mural ‘‘Creation’’at the
schools lecture hall.
Kahlo often watched as Rivera created a mural, according
to some reports, she told a friend that she would someday have Rivera’s baby.
In 1928 Frida was
introduced to a group centered around the Cuban Communist, Julio Antonio Mella,
one of the members was Tina Modotti, through her Frida met Diego. Later she
showed him some of her paintings, asking if she had talent. Rivera incorporated
her portrait into his mural ‘‘Ballad of Revolutio’’ in the Ministry of Public
Education, she was shown as a member of the Mexican Communist Party, which she
joined in 1928.
On August 21, 1930, Kahlo became Rivera’s
wife. Frida’s mother didn’t approve their marrige, she said that Diego was too
old and too fat, also he was a communist and atheist. Frida’s father knows
Diego could affort her medical needs so he didn’t protest. In 1930 the pain and
deformity in Kahlo’s leg get worst, she met Dr. Leo Eloesser, well-known bone
surgeon and Diego’s friend, he become Frida’s most trusted medical advisor for
the rest of her life.
In 1930, they lived in San Francisco,
California, they went to New York City for Rivera’s show at the Museum of
Modern Art and later moved to Detroit. Kahlo
and Rivera’s time in New York City in 1933 was surrounded by controversy, Diego
created a mural titled Man at the Crossroads in the building
at Rockefeller Center. Rockefeller halted the work after Rivera included a
portrait of Lenin. Months after this, couple returned to Mexico and went to
live in San Angel, Mexico.
In 1934 they were separated after Frida
discoverd that Diego had an affair with her sister Cristina. In response to this familial betrayal,
Kahlo cut off most of her trademark long dark hair. They went through periods
of separation, but they helped exiled soviet communist Leon Trotsky and his
wife in 1937. The Trotskys came to stay with them at the Blue House as they had
received asylum in Mexico. Kahlo and Trotsky reportedly had affair during this time. Kahlo divorced Rivera
in 1939. They did not stay divorced for long, remarrying in 1940. The couple
continued to lead largely separate lives, both becoming involved with other
people over the years.
