Self-portraits – in 10
years van Gogh created over 43 self portraits, both painting and drawings. He
didn’t have money to pay models so to develop his skills as an atrtist he
painted mostly his own portreits. One of his most intresting and popular
portreits is the one with Bandaged Ear wich he made in January 1889 few weeks
after cutting his ear
Sunflowers – many people don’t know
that Sunflowers ale two series of paintings. First one Van Gogh painted in
Paris, when he was living with his brother Theo. The Paris Sunflowers are set
of four paintings where flowers are lying on a ground. When Vincent moved to
Arles in 1888 he began The Arles Sunflowers, he made them for his friend
Gauguin-also artist-and to decorate the Yellow House wich he was renting.
The Arles Sunflowers are diffrent from the Paris flowers, they ale posed in
vases, poking skywards. Vincent really enjoyed working with sunflowers, he
wrote about this in his letters for Theo as well as about that he was planing
to make 12 painting of Sunflowers in total.
The Potato Eaters - completed in 1885, is considered by many to be Van Gogh's
first great work of art. He made this work to prove he was on his way to
become a great painter. The painting represent reality of difficult country
life, he shows people on a painting as tired and hard working. The
message of the painting was more important to Van Gogh than technical
perfection. He was very pleased with the result even when his painting drew criticism
because of its dark colours and the figures full of mistakes. Nowadays, the
Potato Eaters is one of Van Gogh’s most famous works.

I've seen the Potato Eaters in the Amsterdam museum - while it is gloomy, dark and modern in style, the faces of the people and not so much different from how great Dutch masters (Rembrandt for instance) painted peasants and common people . They are deformed by hard work and difficult life circumstances.
