Van Gogh’s Paintings I
Vincent van Gogh
completed more than 2,100 art works, consisting 860 oil paintings and over
1,300 watercolors drawings and sketches. Several of his works are one of the
most expensive work of arts in the world. ‘‘Irises’’ was sold for a price of
$53.9 million and ‘‘Portrait of Dr. Gachet’’, which is the most expensive painting,
for $82.5 milion. Unfortunately, during his life he has sold only one of his
paintings – ‘‘The Red Vineyards near Arles’’.
Vincent painted ,,Starry
Night'' in 1889 during his stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole near
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. He was allowed more than any of the other patients. He
could leave the hospital and was allowed to paint and read, he was even given a
studio. Van Gogh had paranoia and was diagnosed with epileptic fits. Vincent
began to suffer from hallucination and had suicide thoughts. Because of his
depression he returned to the darker colors from the beginning of his career
and ,,Starry Night'' is a example of that shift. Dominating color in this painting
is blue, it blends hills into sky, also the village that lays in the bottom is
painted with dark colors .Elements that stand out are stars and moon, there is
a big contrast between them and the rest of the painting.

It's interesting that people did not appreciate his style back in his day while now, once we've got used to it, it's considered classic. The same goes for fashion, design and many other areas of life - people just have to get used to things being different.
